Organizer
An organizer is the questionnaire your accountant sends you at the start of a tax engagement. It asks about your income, deductions, dependents, business activity, and anything else that affects your return — and prompts you to upload the matching documents along the way.
You can open it from the home dashboard when your accountant has assigned one, or from the Organizer link in your portal navigation.
Why the organizer matters
Filling out the organizer carefully means your accountant doesn’t need to chase you for follow-up questions later. The fewer “wait, did you also have…?” messages, the faster your return gets filed.
The landing page
When you open the organizer for the first time, you’ll see a welcome screen with:
- The engagement and tax year it’s for
- How long it usually takes (often 15-30 minutes for a simple personal return, longer for businesses)
- A Start button
Once you’ve started, the same page becomes a progress summary — how many questions you’ve answered, how many are still open, and how many documents have been uploaded.

You can leave at any time and pick up where you left off. Your progress saves automatically.
How the wizard works
When you click Start (or Continue), you step into the wizard — a focused screen that walks you through one section at a time.
Each section covers one topic, like:
- Personal information
- Filing status and dependents
- Wages and salary
- Investment income
- Self-employment
- Deductions
- Required documents
The left side shows the section list with check marks for sections you’ve finished. The main area shows the questions and document slots for whatever section you’re on.

Answering questions
Each question is a single prompt with a clear answer field. Question types include:
| Type | What you do |
|---|---|
| Yes / No | Tap one of the two buttons |
| Multiple choice | Pick from a short list |
| Text | Type a short answer |
| Number | Enter an amount or count |
| Date | Pick a date from a calendar |
If a question doesn’t apply to you (for example, the dependents section when you have no dependents), the wizard usually skips ahead automatically based on an earlier answer.
Uploading documents in the wizard
Some sections have document slots — for example, “Upload your W-2” or “Upload last year’s return.” Each slot shows what’s needed and has an Upload button. Click it and pick the file from your device.

Files uploaded inside the organizer are saved to your Documents area automatically, so you don’t have to upload them twice.
Repeatable sections
If a section can have more than one instance — like multiple W-2 jobs or several children — the wizard adds a ”+ Add another” button. Each instance gets its own set of questions.
Moving between sections
- Click Next at the bottom to move forward
- Click Back to revisit the previous section
- Use the section list on the left to jump to any section directly
The wizard remembers your answers — switching sections doesn’t lose anything.
Review and submit
After you’ve worked through every section, the wizard takes you to a Review screen.
- Each section is listed with a summary of your answers
- Document slots show what’s been uploaded
- Anything still blank is flagged in yellow
Look through it. If anything needs fixing, click the section name to jump back. When you’re satisfied, click Submit.

Once submitted, the organizer is sent to your accountant. They’ll receive a notification and start preparing your return.
Viewing a submitted organizer
After submitting, the organizer page becomes a read-only summary. Each section shows your answers with a green check mark, and you can see which documents have been received.

If you realize you need to change something after submitting, message your accountant. They can reopen the organizer or update the answer for you.
Saving and coming back later
Your progress saves automatically as you answer each question. You can close the browser, switch devices, sign in later, and pick up exactly where you left off.
If you’d rather knock it out in one sitting on a laptop, that works too. Both flows are supported.
Tips
- Have your documents nearby. W-2s, 1099s, last year’s return, and statements — having them open speeds you through.
- Answer honestly, even if you’re not sure. Best estimates are better than skipped questions. Your accountant will follow up if anything’s off.
- Skip the document slots if you’ll upload them elsewhere. You can come back, or upload to your general Documents area later — the slots aren’t mandatory unless your accountant marks them required.
- Don’t worry about typos. You can change any answer before you click Submit. After submitting, message your accountant for changes.
What’s next
- Documents — upload extra files outside the organizer
- Messages — ask questions while you’re filling things out
- Signatures — the next step after your organizer is submitted
